Transforming Fashion: Iris Van Herpen

Vision. Innovation. A point of view. These are the things we’re taught to look for in truly outstanding new design and to be quite honest, I hear these descriptions being bestowed upon current designers pretty regularly without, what I think, is a real understanding of what that even means anymore. In an industry overflowing with new start-up labels, brands and designers, a point of view and innovation should be pretty easy to find, no? Whether in medium, technique and textile manipulation, silhouette. Yet, it’s not often that I find myself able to describe what I am seeing in that way.

Such is not the case with Iris Van Herpen. As one of the most innovative haute couture designers of our time, Van Herpen combines innovation, craftsmanship and technology in a way that makes you say, “WHOA. I’ve never seen that before”. And isn’t that just refreshing??

Van Herpen is known for her willingness to experiment—exploring new fabrics created by blending steel with silk or iron filings with resin, incorporating unexpected materials ranging from umbrella tines to magnets, and pushing the boundaries of technologies such as 3-D printing. Her unique treatment of materials and her willingness to take a different path by blending design, philosophy, science, technology and fashion is not only different, it’s inspiring. When all of these influences come together, is the final product art or is it fashion? In this case, it is very much both.

Which is why I am so SO excited about the High Museum of Art‘s groundbreaking first fashion exhibition, Transforming Fashion: Iris Van Herpen, slated to open this weekend. Featuring 45 outfits from 15 of van Herpen’s collections, this exhibition is an amazing celebration of the art of fashion design and will feature some of the world’s first 3D printed designs (check out some of the incredible pieces below). To say I’ve been a fan for a long time would be an understatement and to see her pieces up close and personal will be no less than an incredible experience, I am sure.

Those of you in Atlanta will NOT want to miss the FREE opening night soiree on Friday, November 6th from 7pm to 10pm. Iris herself will be in attendance (REAL TALK, don’t miss out.) and the evening will also feature performances by Atlanta Ballet’s Wabi Sabi group and DJ Speakerfoxxx. See you all there, right?  If you have to miss opening night or aren’t in the ATL this week, fret not: you can always visit the museum at a later date since the exhibition will be around until May 15th!

Until Friday, loves.
