Ahhhh, the leisurely lunch. Such a rare luxury these days it is to take our time in the middle of a work day to enjoy a meal the way it ought to be enjoyed. There’s nothing more I love than a proper lunch, yet I find myself dining at my desk or in a massive hurry more often than not these days. So when I got a chance to try out the brand new lunch menu at The Southern Gentleman (which BTW, is only a few blocks from my office — AMEN.), I decided I would make the time to take my time. After all, food is meant to be savored not shoved, right?
When it comes to nice things to say about a lunch spot, I really can’t say enough about Southern Gentleman’s foray into lunch service. In a nutshell: real southern fare with a refined twist that will leave you more satisfied than stuffed and even happier to be living (or visiting) a place where “southern hospitality” is a mission, not just a tagline. Each dish on the menu is a combination of regionally sourced ingredients and local farm produce, carefully assembled to stay true to traditional southern flavors while playfully adding their own twist. From their take on the traditional low county boil to the delicious molasses lacquered quail, there’s something fun about every dish.
If you’re feeling frisky around lunchtime or just want to throw it back to the days where hard liquor at lunch was totally acceptable, opt for one of their craft cocktails to wash it all down with. Creative takes on barrel aged cocktails made with rye whisky, bourbon (because what is more southern?) and gin will have you feeling right in no time. For the ladies that prefer vodka concoctions (hi!), The Southern Belle (Strawberry infused Vodka, Lemon & Lime Juice, Mint, Bubbles) will hit the spot just fine.
So what’s the big lesson of the day? Take a leisurely lunch now and then, if only because you deserve a short escape, and when you’re ready for your next one head over to Southern Gentleman for a bourbon cocktail and a proper southern plate.
